Each residency program caps at 3 verified insiders so the signal stays strong and students get distinct voices. Slots are per specialty, not per institution — a big hospital has a separate 3-slot cap for each program it runs.
Example
At Johns Hopkins, the Internal Medicine residency gets its own 3 slots, the Psychiatry residency gets its own 3 slots, Emergency Medicine gets its own 3, and so on. 15+ specialties at one institution = 15+ independent slot caps of 3 each.
If all 3 slots at your specific program are already claimed, you’ll go on that program’s waitlist and get your slot the moment one opens — usually when a current insider graduates or leaves.

You can decline any question at no cost. The student gets a full refund, and we flag repeat offenders from our end.
What if my program finds out I’m on here?
They can't. We verify you with the NPPES registry (public, required for any licensed physician), but nothing about your account is ever public. Your hospital has no API into our user table.
What if I don’t get any questions?
You pay nothing recurring. No monthly fee, no subscription. The only cost is the one-time $1.50 ID verification at signup. Worst case, you're out $1.50. Best case, you earn on every answered question you choose to write.
Why $1.50 for ID verification?
Federal KYC rules require identity verification for anyone receiving payouts over certain thresholds. Stripe runs the ID check (same flow used by Lyft, Shopify, Airbnb), and Resident Insider never sees your ID. The $1.50 covers Stripe's actual fee — we don't keep a cent of it.
Can I answer questions from students at other programs?
Yes — and it's encouraged. Students can message any verified resident regardless of specialty or degree track. You get a heads-up on off-track questions and can decline if the match doesn't feel right.
